BVMed companies to found “Cataract Initiative”

A group of companies from the “Eye Surgery” division of the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed) have founded the “Cataract Initiative”, an information platform for patients and other interested parties that provides information on the benefits of modern intraocular lenses.

Every year, more than 600,000 people in Germany are diagnosed with cataracts and face surgery. This raises many issues including: what actually is a cataract? How can the disease be treated? Are there different types of artificial lenses? Which type is best for me? What happens during surgery?

Such issues are best clarified in a one-to-one meeting between the patients and their doctor. However, a growing number of patients are seeking more detailed information – for example through brochures or the Internet. The Cataract Initiative is aimed at providing patients with just the information they are seeking.

The Cataract Initiative is a joint project by the group of companies in the “Eye Surgery” division of the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed). The companies’ aim is to inform the public about cataracts, the causes and treatment and to provide objective information about the types and performance of modern intraocular lenses.

The “Cataract – Individual solutions with modern artificial lenses” brochure published by the Cataract Initiative gives a concise and clear overview of the topic. For example, it explains the benefits of multifocal intraocular lenses when viewing close and distant objects, toric lenses that also correct astigmatism, or lenses protecting the retina from high-energy light through the use of special filters incorporated in the intraocular lenses. The Initiative’s website contains extensive information that is added to and updated on a regular basis.

The Cataract Initiative has also set up a press office to provide the mass media with articles on cataracts and information on progress in the therapy of the disease aimed at the general public.
