Establishment of the German Health Regions Network

The "German Health Regions Network" association was instituted in the Berlin office of the state of Schleswig-Holstein on the 14th February 2008. The association acknowledges the growing importance of the health care industry, and hopes to strengthen it, with a particular focus on the project-related cooperation between the German health regions.

Health management is one of the rapidly expanding sectors in Germany. Dr. Josef Hilbert of the Institute of Work and Technology (IAT) at the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences, estimates that by 2020, approximately 1 million new jobs will be created in Germany. He regards the demographic development in Germany as a major factor contributing to this development. The age structure of the population is changing and there are increasing demands for services which cater for the aging population, suffering from particular age-related diseases.

Support for increased cooperation and networks

Integrated treatment models and cooperative interdisciplinary scientific approaches will strengthen the fields of German medicine and medical technology. This will lead to patents and hence greater business opportunities than was previously possible. The “German Health Regions Network” association supports such cooperative and network approaches. According to Hilbert, the association brings region-specific skills into a national context. This is important in order to optimise and speed up developments in medical treatment, research and science, as well as in terms of products and services.

Another major focus of the association is to bring attention to the capacities of the German health care industry. The association hopes to initiate a joint presentation of the entire health industry in Germany by showcasing the huge potentials of the regions at different locations using concrete examples.
The founding members of the association include:
  • Gesundheitsinitiative Schleswig-Holstein (Health Initiative Schleswig-Holstein)
  • BioCon Valley GmbH (Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania)
