HANDTE Umwelttechnik GmbH – a system provider of energy-efficient exhaust air purification solutions

The purification of exhaust air, a classical technology for end-of-pipe environmental protection, is commonly used in cases when industrial processes result in malodorous exhaust air or air contaminated with hazardous substances. HANDTE Umwelttechnik GmbH started specialising in such solutions way back in 1889.

HANDTE Umwelttechnik has a workforce of 200, 105 of whom work at its company headquarters in Tuttlingen, Germany. It also has offices in other German cities and a production site in Shanghai, China. The company provides end-to-end solutions in the area of exhaust air purification for a broad range of industrial sectors. The company was established in 1889 on the basis of previous experience acquired in the manufacture of flour milling machines. In the late 19th century, Germany was home to around 70,000 flour mills, and HANDTE was one of many German flour-milling machine manufacturers. The high proportion of flour dust in the air inside and around flour mills posed a major problem. The company’s founder, Jakob Handte, was particularly interested in such problems and began constructing ventilation systems in the search for a solution to this issue. The company has since continued to develop and has become one of the leading European manufacturers of extraction and filtering systems.

Biofilters – excellently suited for removal of odour and degradation of VOC

In addition to all the standard chemico-physical processes in the field of exhaust air purification, HANDTE Umwelttechnik also offers biological filter systems. When a manufacturing facility experiences extremely bad odours, they usually end up needing one of these systems. Biofilters are the method of choice for removing odour in animal carcass rendering plants, waste management facilities, wastewater treatment plants and some food production companies. Biofilters have also been found to achieve excellent results with regard to the degradation of air pollutants such as benzene (highly carcinogenic) or other volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the solvent industry or in foundries, for example. Advice and support from an experienced filtering system manufacturer is often of key importance. “With regard to the food industry, it is necessary to check whether there are any intermediary products that might lead to the acidification and hence destruction of the biofilter,” said Dr.-Ing. Jakob Handte, Managing Director of the company that has been run by the same family for four generations. “The entire system, including exhaust air conditioning and biofilters, needs to be serviced at regular intervals,” Handte concluded.

Broad range of processes and systems for optimal client solutions

Biofilter systems are usually chosen when the concentration of volatile carbon compounds is relatively low and non-biological methods would consume too much energy and money. “In cases where we have to deal with high VOC concentrations, there is a risk that biofilters might not be able to reduce such concentrations to a legal limit,” said Dr.-Ing. Jakob Handte. These are cases where non-biological solutions need to be chosen. The broad range of efficient methods and state-of-the-art system components allow us to come up with optimal solutions for our clients. In order to do this, we need to have access to a broad range of different processes,” Dr.-Ing. Handte said.

The company has recently added a completely new product to its toolbox – the HANDTE HeatSaverBox – a system component that connects a filter directly to a heat recovery unit. This new product is based on finding a way to recover energy present in exhaust air, especially when it is heavily saturated with water vapour. “This has led to the development of a heat exchanger that can be integrated into an existing system relatively easily. The specific design of the heat exchanger enables it to handle the quantities of water that arise from the recovery of heat energy,” Dr.-Ing. Handte said. Nowadays, as efficient utilisation of energy becomes increasingly important, this system is an ideal combination of end-of-pipe environmental protection measures with the latest resource efficient technologies.
