5th Clinical Trials Call

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Foundation have launched the fifth call for their joint “Clinical Trials” funding programme.

Following the previous successful Clinical Trials calls, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) will once again be funding clinical trials. The two funding institutions will provide 15 million euros per year each starting in 2009. The objective of the programme is to systematically improve patient-oriented clinical research in Germany by boosting the expertise of German university hospitals in planning and carrying out clinical trials as well as helping to bring German expertise in line with international standards and ensure its establishment on a broad basis.

Funding will be given to clinical studies that result from scientific research rather than the economic interest of pharmaceuticals producers that are seeking new drugs approval. In connection with this funding programme, the BMBF will fund interventional studies on pharmacological therapies, meta-analyses and systematic reviews of clinical trials.

The DFG will primarily fund interventional clinical studies on non-pharmacological therapies, prognosis studies and controlled studies on secondary prevention if intervention is envisaged, as well as providing funding for diagnostic phase II and III trials. All trials are required to take into appropriate account gender- and age-group-specific aspects.

Proposals must be submitted electronically to the BMBF or the DFG, according to the type of funding sought, as outlined above. The deadline for submission is 30th October 2008.
