BioRegio STERN Management GmbH has been honoured by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) for its “Regenerative Biology” competence network. It came second in the “Kompetenznetz 2009” competition on “Sustainable network development”. Hartmut Schauerte, Parliamentary Secretary of State at the BMWi and the German federal government’s commissioner for small and medium-sized businesses, presented BioRegio STERN Managing Director Dr. Klaus Eichenberg with the 10,000 euro award in Berlin.
The BMWi’s “Kompetenznetze Deutschland” initiative brings together extremely innovative and effective national competence networks with a focus on technology. It has identified 117 technology clusters from nine innovation fields throughout Germany since it was established ten years ago. In his speech, the chairman of the initiative’s 12-strong scientific committee Prof. Jörg Sydow, holder of the Chair for Inter-Firm Cooperation at Freie Universität Berlin, highlighted the consistently high standard of the entries. He said that, as “examples of best practice”, the networks now being honoured served as models for further initiatives in developing their own independent activities. In the STERN “Regenerative Biology” competence network, the judges were struck by the surprising solution for establishing rewarding collaboration between biotechnology and medical technology companies. As well as the quality of collaboration and the focus of its content, Prof. Sydow said they were also impressed by the robust, long-term funding. “This collaboration provides a basis for developing an even stronger platform for biotechnology in the region than has existed in the past.”
Regenerative biology is regarded as one of the key technologies of the 21st century. It combines biomedical research, biomaterial research, biotechnology, molecular biology, chemistry and medicine. The “Regenerative Biology” competence network of BioRegio STERN Management GmbH stems from the success in the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s BioProfile competition in 2001. The number of participating biotechnology companies has since risen by 50 percent to over 90; half of all medical technology companies from the region are already involved in active collaboration with the network. BioRegio STERN Management GmbH initiates projects such as the “Harnessing synergies – medtech and biotech” programme and encourages cooperation between companies, research institutes and interest groups. “In our region, we have 120 medtech companies, most of which are well established, and 90 biotech companies that are mainly young and open-minded, whose corporate success often still lies in the future,” explained BioRegio STERN CEO Dr. Klaus Eichenberg. “We have succeeded in forming viable partnerships between these two very different concepts. We are continuing to systematically develop this network as we don’t regard the award primarily as an acknowledgement of our past achievements but rather as a remit for the future. We will also be investing the prize money to this end.”
