A company’s success not only depends on innovative and high-quality products and services, but also on the successful commercialisation of products at home and abroad. With its active business development activities, which also involve putting Baden-Württemberg companies in contact with potential development and sales partners, BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg GmbH gives companies an economic boost and secures know-how and jobs in the state. The initial contact between the Heidelberg-based life sciences company Medicyte GmbH with an international distribution partner in the Netherlands is the most recent example of BIOPRO’s successful activities in this area.
Heidelberg-based Medicyte GmbH specialises in the production of genetically upregulated primary human cells known as upcyte® cells and related products of the highest quality in virtually unlimited quantities.
In late 2012, Medicyte contacted BIOPRO to request support for contacting distribution partners in other European countries. When BIOPRO searches for international partners for Baden-Württemberg companies, the state agency often makes use of its international network partners, and in this case, BIOPRO’s contact with the Netherlands Business Support Office Stuttgart (NBSO) brought the desired results. BIOPRO prepared an anonymous company profile and contacted NBSO, which in turn approached potential distribution partners in the Netherlands.
Within a relatively short time period, Westburg BV emerged as the optimal partner for Medicyte, and BIOPRO was able to provide Medicyte with the contact details of Westburg BV’s managing director who was extremely interested in working with the Heidelberg-based company. Further contact with Westburg BV and subsequent face-to-face negotiations then took place between Medicyte and Westburg, and in July 2013, Medicyte was able to announce that Westburg BV had become its exclusive distributor for the Benelux countries.
“Medicyte’s technologies, the company’s professional approach and its high-quality products, which excellently complement our growing product range in the field of cell biology, were highly attractive. After visiting Medicyte’s facility in Heidelberg, we were convinced that a collaboration will help both companies to establish an even stronger position in the growing cell biology market segment,” said Jurjen Balkema, commercial director and co-owner of Westburg BV. Marion Dumitraskovic, sales and marketing manager at Medicyte commented: “Westburg’s know-how as well as its practical and scientific expertise immediately convinced us that we should work together. The biotech market in the Benelux countries is experiencing continued growth and we are happy to have found such a highly professional and well-established partner to distribute our products in these countries.”
BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg congratulates the two partners on the establishment of this partnership and wishes them a fruitful cooperation in the future.
Medicyte GmbH is a life sciences company headquartered in Heidelberg that specialises in the development and commercialisation of products that enable the qualitative and quantitative improvement of human cell culture products. Using its proprietary upcyte® and vericyte® technologies, Medicyte is able to offer its clients high-quality human cells in virtually unlimited quantities. These human cells can be applied to cell-based assays in development and production (ADME/Tox; HTS: “high throughput screening“, etc.), cell-based research, cosmetics and chemicals testing and cell therapy. The cells enable the development of new therapies for diseases, the identification of potentially hazardous substances and circumvent animal experiments.
Westburg BV is a privately owned Dutch distribution company. Westburg has been a successful provider of consumables, reagents and devices for use in life sciences research and diagnostics laboratories since 1984.
