Cooperative projects with developing countries

The German Research Foundation has amended the system for financing cooperative projects with developing countries.

The “DFG/BMZ – research cooperations” programme jointly financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) has come to an end. The cooperation with developing countries will be continued in modified form as part of the DFG’s funding programmes designed to promote cooperation between researchers from Germany and developing countries for joint work on scientifically sophisticated research projects.

In contrast to previous DFG/BMZ research cooperations, project partners in developing countries will from now on be able to receive DFG funding. Funding will be granted to projects in which the contribution of partners in developing countries is essential for the success of the project and if the cooperation partner does not have enough money or does not receive support through his or her national funding institutions. The DFG’s usual quality criteria apply. In addition, the DFG is hoping that such projects will increase the research capacity and the scientific performance of researchers in their own countries.

With these modifications, the DFG is now able to be more flexible in its funding of the growing number of projects involving researchers from Germany and developing countries. This is in line with its international strategy to expand the cooperation between the applicants in Germany and outstanding scientists in developing countries. Scientists from all disciplines at German research institutions and who have completed their scientific training are entitled to submit applications.
