Dr. Andriy Luzhetskyy, scientist at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Freiburg has received a scholarship from the Helmholtz Association young investigators’ group programme.
The programme is aimed at outstanding junior researchers working in the six following research areas: energy, earth and environment, health, key technologies, structure of matter, aeronautics, space and transport. The scholarship holders receive an annual budget of at least 250,000 euros for a period of five years to establish their own research group at one of the Helmholtz Association’s centres in order to carry out independent research. In addition, the scientists give lectures and seminars at a partner university, thereby enabling them to acquire the qualifications for a higher academic career. In 2010, 18 junior researchers were admitted to the programme. The awardees went through a multi-tier selection process involving external reviews and the presentation of their research to an interdisciplinary jury.
Dr. Andriy Luzhetskyy did his studies at the Faculty of Biosciences at the University of Lviv in the Ukraine. He was awarded a PhD in genetics and biotechnology in 2003. Since 2004, Andriy Luzhetskyy has been working as postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology, at the University of Freiburg. His research group will be established at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, which focuses on infectious diseases in general and on their prevention and treatment.
Dr. Andriy Luzhetskyy is the first researcher from the field of pharmaceutical sciences to be enrolled in the young investigators group programme of the Helmholtz Association.
