Master of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology

In the next winter semester, Freiburg University will offer a new master’s course. The interdisciplinary Bioinformatics and Systems Biology course is the direct result of the Freiburg Initiative for Systems Biology.

The Freiburg Initiative for Systems Biology (FRISYS) focuses on the development of systems biology in Germany. This research concept is supported by the BMBF under the FORSYS programme with a total of 13.5 million euros in funding. Right from the beginning, the Freiburg scientists had plans to use about one million euros for a specific teaching programme in order to counteract the common complaint that world-class research has become detached from university education. This concept will now be put into reality by the Faculties of Applied Sciences and Biology, two disciplines that are becoming increasingly interlinked.

Modern molecular biology, biotechnology and medicine increasingly require the use of computer methods for the solution of scientific problems. It is the objective of the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology course to train experts at the interface of the computer sciences and life sciences, who will then be able to contribute effectively to the advancement of these innovative, up-and-coming disciplines.

The fulltime, two-year course is for bachelor or diploma graduates with a degree in computer sciences, biology or another life science discipline with a basic knowledge of mathematics, computer sciences, biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. The students will have a personal tutor and work together in small international groups and use both German and English. The students can adapt their curriculum according to their previous training, desired specialisation and language skills. During the project and master’s thesis, the students are involved in research projects at the Institute for Computer Science or the Faculty of Biology. Students can apply for the course until 31 August 2008.
