Rhine Neckar Biotechnology Cluster wins German Top Cluster Contest

On 2nd September 2008, BioRN Cluster Management GmbH announced the success of the Rhine-Neckar biotechnology cluster (BioRN) in the Top Cluster Contest of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The BioRN cluster was distinguished as one of the five most significant high-tech regions in Germany and will receive part of the 200 million Euro federal grant.

The Rhine Neckar metropolitan region will use the funds to develop a total of 70 new drugs, diagnostic products and technology platforms, as well as about 20 innovative services in the field of cell-based and molecular medicine by the year 2013. This will guarantee about 400 highly qualified jobs in research and development and by 2018, the region hopes to create up to 4,000 additional jobs. “We are equipped and determined to establish ourselves as the number one location in Europe for medical biotechnology in the coming years,” said Dr. Christian Tidona, designated managing director of BioRN Cluster Management GmbH.

BioRN Cluster Management GmbH is a public-private partnership between the Rhine-Neckar BioRegion, the Heidelberg Technology Park, the Rhine-Neckar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. The newly founded company will be in charge of the coordination, integration, development and marketing of the BioRN cluster.

The Cluster’s major foci are:

  • the BioRN Stemcell Network at the core of which is a new Centre for Stem Cell Research (I-STEM) founded as a public-private partnership (see DKFZ press release);
  • the BioRN Biomarker Centre, bringing together new detection methods for biomarkers, enabling better diagnosis and therapy monitoring of human diseases;
  • the BioRN Incubator, in which promising biopharmaceutical projects in the field of cell-based and molecular medicine will be developed to industrial maturity;
  • the BioRN Academy, which concentrates on the recruitment, education and training of talented life science graduates to become highly qualified experts and executives in the biotechnology sector.
