State affiliate BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg, an agency focussing on medical engineering, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals in Baden-Württemberg, presents itself at MEDICA. Find us at the Baden-Württemberg joint booth (hall 16 C41) to obtain information about our region. The recently published industry report “Healthcare Industry 2013, Facts and Figures for Baden-Württemberg” containing current data on medical engineering as well as a biotech guide is available at the booth.
The report gives separate information on the three industries – the biotechnology, medical engineering and pharmaceutical industries. It also gives a comprehensive overview on the most important location factors in the state and on the manufacturing healthcare industry in Baden-Württemberg as a whole. It considers data from biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies as well as medical engineering companies that carry out research and development. The industry report is based on current data from the State Statistical Office (2010), the Federal Statistical Office (2012) and the BIOPRO company database (as of 2013).The healthcare industry is crucial to Baden-Württemberg as a recession-proof employer that is loyal to the region, and it mostly consists of small and medium-sized companies. Approximately 85,000 people are employed in the 159 biotechnology, 635 medical engineering and 136 pharmaceutical companies. In 2010 these three industry branches together achieved revenues of just over 23 billion euros. In comparison to the other German states, Baden-Württemberg is the largest hub for pharmaceutical and medical engineering companies and the third largest for biotechnology companies. More than 65 percent of the production of medical engineering and pharmaceutical companies in Baden-Württemberg is exported.Start-ups in high-tech industry branches require capital. Therefore, the report also discusses company foundations and funding. It presents important tools that assist in company foundation (funding programs such as Young Innovators, start-up vouchers and financing options). Most start-ups in the healthcare industry are in the biotechnology sector. With 9 new start-ups in 2009/2010 and 12 in the period from 1/2011-7/2013, the number of company foundations in Baden-Württemberg has remained stable at a high level. The industry report also describes the research and educational environment and presents the variety of research clusters in Baden-Württemberg. Research in the healthcare sector is carried out at 8 universities, 11 universities of applied sciences, 24 non-university research centres and 5 university hospitals. This represents very good overall conditions for the three high-tech branches in the healthcare industry. At the MEDICA trade fair, BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg will also present the new edition of the biotech guide Baden-Württemberg. It contains 143 short company profiles and gives an overview of the biotechnology industry in Baden-Württemberg. We would be happy to present you with your personal copy of the “Healthcare Industry 2013” report and the “Biotech Guide” at MEDICA (hall 16 C41).Dr. Luther will be back in the office from 25th November and available to answer any questions you may have on the report.
