Viscofan BioEngineering: Cell culture inserts with a collagen membrane

Viscofan BioEngineering is the first company to market cell culture inserts for the cultivation of cells and tissues that are entirely made from collagen. In contrast to traditional PTFE membranes, Viscofan´s cell culture inserts do not need to be coated with collagen prior to use. The new collagen inserts are extremely suitable for the cultivation of adherent primary cells such as cardiomyocytes, neurons, fibroblasts, cell lines, stem cells as well as facilitating the formation of tissue structures.

Just like the company's Collagen Cell Carriers (CCC), the new membranes are made of largely intact, non-crosslinked native collagen fibres that are processed on the industrial scale into thin sheets of highly stable and elastic film. The new, self-supporting collagen inserts consist of a collagen membrane that is fixed into a spherical carrier and can be easily removed after cell cultivation for subsequent research applications, for example in the field of regenerative medicine. Implantation studies involving different animal species and tissues have already shown the excellent biocompatibility of the collagen matrices in vivo.

The cell-covered membranes can be directly embedded in histological slices and dyed. Investigations have shown that the collagen membrane is permeable to nutrients, which enables it to be used for specific applications, including the cultivation of cells for use in skin models or in studies assessing transmembrane transport. This opens up completely new possibilities for barrier experiments and co-cultivation. The new insert is of particular interest for cryoconservation and implantation studies.
