ILM Institut für Lasertechnologien in der Medizin und Meßtechnik an der Universität Ulm

The Foundation for Laser Technologies in Medicine was founded in 1985 and only ten years later expanded to include the field of metrology, renaming it the present Institute for Laser Technologies in Medicine and Metrology (ILM) Ulm. The ILM is a legally independent, business-oriented research institution. As part of the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg (innBW), it receives basic funding from the state and is a link between industry and research with a focus on applied photonics.
In the meantime, the ILM has developed into an institute in which a number of other optical technologies are used in addition to lasers. The core business area is health with a focus on medicine / dentistry. In industrial metrology, the focus is on quality/production control. Here, the ILM has long been represented with photothermics for the non-contact characterization of surfaces/near-surface layers and, more recently, with various methods for form measurement. The application of optical technologies is becoming increasingly important in the entire field of life sciences, including agriculture, food, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and the environment. The fields of activity are chosen in such a way that the competences available at the ILM can be utilized in as many different ways as possible. Additional know-how required is obtained through cooperation with external partners.
