Press release - 24/07/2026 Changes in brain state influence the readiness to form memories Most everyday moments are quickly forgotten, while others stay with us for a lifetime. How the brain determines which memories are retained and which are lost remains an open question. A neuroscience team at the University of Tübingen, has found that spontaneous fluctuations in the brain’s internal state influence how ready the memory system is to store new information.
Press release - 23/07/2026 Flabby and flexible: How Machine Learning helps to build new proteins A team of researchers from the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research have developed a model that learns how to generate proteins whose structures are highly flexible, even with patterns that are uncommon in natural proteins. Their work, marks a step towards the goal of designing new proteins for applications in biotechnology, therapeutics and environmental research.

Through this alliance, the two biotech cluster organizations and DEEP – Institute for Deep Tech Innovation at ESMT will collaborate strategically to reinforce Germany’s position as a leading hub for translating scientific breakthroughs into impactful healthcare solutions.
Press release - 22/07/2026 The Individual Genetic Background Shapes the Evolution of Cancer Why do cancers develop differently in different people—even when they are exposed to the same risk factors? An international research group, including the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), has now demonstrated in mice that an organism’s genetic makeup significantly influences the course of cancer development.
Press release - 20/07/2026 Blood vessels guide immune cells to metastases It has long been suspected that endothelial cells play a key role in determining how the body’s immune system responds to tumors. Researchers at the DKFZ and the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University have now identified, in mouse studies, a specialized population of blood vessel lining endothelial cells that enable an effective immune defense against cancer metastases in the liver.
Press release - 17/07/2026 NovoTags: AI-designed proteins help scientists see inside living cells Researchers have designed synthetic and inducible proteins that bind to bright fluorescent dyes with high specificity and affinity, significantly expanding the toolkit for multicolour imaging of proteins inside cells.
Press release - 16/07/2026 New Findings on Acute Leukemias: Specific Mutations Provide Targets for More Targeted Therapies Researchers at the NCT Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) have, for the first time, systematically determined how specific mutations promote acute myeloid leukemias. The results show why IDH1- and IDH2-mutated leukemias develop differently despite similar molecular mechanisms—and open up new approaches for diagnostics and targeted therapies.
Press release - 16/07/2026 Impact of Overweight on Cancer Risk May Be Significantly Underestimated Being overweight and obesity may contribute to significantly more cancer cases than previously thought. This is the conclusion reached by researchers at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Their analysis shows that when more accurate measures of body fat and methodological biases are considered, more than 10 percent of all cancer cases can be attributed to increased body weight - nearly twice as many as previous estimates suggested.
Press release - 14/07/2026 Steering the Formulation of Engineered Tissue by Sound Waves With the aid of physical forces it is possible to actively steer the formation of engineered tissue. For example, sound waves can be used to create functional vascular networks with blood vessel-like structures in vitro. Scientists at the Center for Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University have demonstrated this through their methodology for acoustic manipulation.
Press release - 09/07/2026 DKFZ Innovation Award and DKFZ Patient Expert Award Presented The Friends of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) support the DKFZ and aim to help strengthen its position in the international arena. With the DKFZ Innovation Award, presented at this year’s annual reception, the association honors Helmut Salih, a researcher whose innovative work bridges the gap between immunological research and patient care.
