The Donation for lasertechnology in medicine was founded in 1985 and only ten years later extended to include the measurement technology. Hence it was renamed to the Institute for lasertechnology in medicine and measurement technology (ILM) Ulm. Today the ILM is a member of the innovation alliance Baden-Württemberg. The mission of the ILM is to conduct applied research and to transfer technologies to the industry. That is why research has a high significance as basis for future projects with industrial partners. The different research projects lead to a continuous improvement of know-how in all seven core competences (device and component development, application development, surface analysis and modification, material and tissue optics, microscopic applications, cell/ molecular/ microbiology und the laser therapy center). The main focus of topics is related to the focus of the groups, which opens up the possibility to broaden the institute’s portfolio without losing the main focus. If necessary external partners from different orientations like medicine, material sciences, informatics or process development provide additional knowledge to complete the project.
