Press release - 18/06/2026 Tailor-made functionalized gelatin – manufactured with reproducible results Gelatin is a versatile natural material. To tailor its properties specifically to the various applications in medicine, diagnostics, and cosmetics, the Fraunhofer IGB has developed a toolbox for chemical functionalization. With the help of automated processes, the modifications can now be scaled under defined conditions, and reproducible batches of modified gelatin can be produced on a scale ranging from grams to kg for customer sampling.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/tailor-made-functionalized-gelatin-manufactured-reproducible-results
Press release - 23/04/2026 Molecular research: When speed meets precision Within biological cells, molecules are constantly in motion. Investigating these motions, however, is still difficult, due to the fact that these processes occur on very small length and time scales. To overcome these challenges, researchers from HITS and MPI-P have developed a simulation method that works rapidly and can predict chemical processes in cells with high precision. Their findings have been published in Nature Communications.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/molecular-research-when-speed-meets-precision
Press release - 20/04/2026 3D-Printed Tissue Substitute A novel biomimetic tissue substitute combines precisely tunable mechanical properties with biological functionality and is now ready for applications in medical technology. The material was developed in the »PolyKARD« project by Fraunhofer IAP and the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute. From 20.-24.04, 2026, the material will be presented together with further developments at the Hannover Messe, Fraunhofer joint booth.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/3d-printed-tissue-substitute
Proof-of-concept study of organoid technology - 26/03/2026 Can organoids improve the treatment of pancreatic cancer? A clinical trial called UNITEPANC is exploring whether organoid-based approaches can improve the treatment of pancreatic cancer. BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg spoke with the study’s principal investigator and pancreatic cancer specialist, Prof. Dr. Thomas Seufferlein of University Hospital Ulm, to discuss the disease more broadly along with the specific aims of the trial. The interview was conducted by Walter Pytlik on behalf of BIOPRO.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/news/can-organoids-improve-treatment-pancreatic-cancer
Press release - 01/10/2024 Reporter Skin: In-vitro Skin Makes Cell Reaction to Test Substance Measurable in Real Time At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, a three-dimensional skin model has now been set up for the first time that directly displays the skin's reaction to substances: The reporter skin. Thanks to the built-in reporter, the cellular response can be measured precisely and quickly – using a living model. https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/reporter-skin-vitro-skin-makes-cell-reaction-test-substance-measurable-real-time
Press release - 05/09/2024 Cohesion at the cellular level: flexible yet stable Research teams from the Universities of Konstanz and Potsdam are analyzing how proteins work together to enable our cells to both stick and move. The marker protein paxillin is at the centre of their interest.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/cohesion-cellular-level-flexible-yet-stable
Press release - 13/06/2024 Eyesight from a 3D Printer Printing a new cornea during an operation to restore a patient’s eyesight: This groundbreaking step in the fight against corneal disorders is set to become reality with a laser based process using personalized bioink. The method was developed by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with Carl Zeiss Meditec AG and Evonik Healthcare. Their project won the idea award in this year’s NEULAND innovation contest.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/eyesight-3d-printer
Press release - 22/05/2024 Stretched beyond the limits of the cell: the molecular biomechanics of collagen Together with colleagues from Israel and USA, HITS researcher Frauke Gräter investigates the effects of physical force on the collagen protein in two different animal model systems. Their goal is to measure the effects of mechanoradicals on the integrity of the tissue and the well-being of the organism, with impact on health and aging.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/stretched-beyond-limits-cell-molecular-biomechanics-collagen
Press release - 18/04/2024 Collagen: Researchers at the NMI decipher how it works in medical treatment Collagen has been used in ophthalmology since the 1990s, particularly in the treatment of corneal defects. However, why and how this technique works was only known in theory. Researchers at the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute in Reutlingen led by Lu Fan have found the necessary evidence and can now reliably explain how this technique works.https://www.gesundheitsindustrie-bw.de/en/article/press-release/collagen-researchers-nmi-decipher-how-it-works-medical-treatment
