Isabelle Seemann: DNA as building block for nanostructures

Since the emergence of nanotechnology in the 1980s DNA has been used as a construction material in many areas. Wires grids and nanorobots can all be produced from this versatile material. Isabelle Seemann scientist at the University of Konstanz works with a particular DNA constellation known as three-way DNA junction. Seemanns findings are of great importance for different areas of knowledge including the material sciences analytics and…

    Nanobiotechnology

The term nanotechnology is known by well over 50 of Germans especially since the lotus effect hit the headlines in the late 1990s. Around the turn of the millennium bio was inserted between nano and technology and nanobiotechnology has since taken up more and more room in the headlines as well as requiring major financial investment. What is nanobiotechnology what is the difference between nanotechnology and nanobiotechnology and where and what…

Protein aggregation: when proximity becomes dangerous

The aggregation of proteins in the human body might have severe medical consequences, as is the case with Alzheimer’s disease, for example. A less known fact is that the biopharmaceutical industry is also faced with the biological phenomenon of protein aggregation and is working on preventive measures.

Goal: online glucose sensor for bioreactors

Microorganisms and sensitive cells that are grown in bioreactors need a well-regulated environment and a food supply in order to do what they are supposed to do: grow and produce biomass and metabolites. Many fermenters are equipped with sensors that continuously measure critical bioprocess parameters, including temperature, pH value and oxygen. Online glucose and ethanol sensors are not yet used in regulated bioreactors, even though they would…

Biological nanopores on chips for determining the properties of molecules

Researchers led by Prof. Dr. Jan C. Behrends and Dr. Gerhard Baaken from the University of Freiburg have developed a chip the size of a fingertip containing biological nanopores that determine molecule mass with great precision. Developing this new system which is a combination of biological and micro-technical components involved a great deal of technical skill. The system has the same level of sensitivity as a chromatography device but is much…

Does cloudy apple juice prevent colon cancer?

The likelihood of developing colon cancer very much depends on dietary factors. Foods and nutrients with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties have been found to reduce the likelihood of developing this kind of cancer. Research done by scientists from the Karlsruhe-based Max Rubner-Institut suggests that cloudy apple juice can prevent colon cancer. However, little is yet known about the molecular relationships between diet and disease.

BMBF project AllerGen: DNA test to protect consumers against food allergens

People who are hypersensitive to a particular food protein can develop an adverse reaction to the smallest amount of the allergenic protein that can range from mild to severe. Quality by Design – a paradigm change in bioprocess development

Bioprocess technology has undergone a fundamental change with regard to the criteria used for validating product quality: around ten years ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revised the 1987 process validation guidance and the subsequent establishment of the Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative heralded a paradigm change in bioprocess understanding and control. The FDA’s guidance underwent a paradigm shift from what was…
