    Genedata facilitates search for biomarkers

Biomarkers play a key role in testing the efficacy of a new drug or finding out adverse reactions to it. For reliable and quick results, modern laboratory methods are used to generate huge amounts of highly complex molecular data. The data then need to be efficiently analysed. The company Genedata, with headquarters in Basel (Switzerland) and offices throughout Europe, including a base in Konstanz (Germany), has developed the software system…

Biobanks: Hidden treasures in different places

Human biobanks are treasure troves for medical research. Although the majority of these repositories were set up with public funds up until now they have only allowed external researchers limited access to information and samples. This will change from 22nd November 2010 when the first six German biobanks hold their inaugural meeting in Berlin to discuss and organise the establishment of the German Biobank Registry Project Portal.

Tancred Frickey – about proteins and programmes

Bioinformatics methods are important tools for the classification of protein sequences. Prof. Dr. Tancred Frickey, Professor of Applied Bioinformatics at the University of Konstanz, has developed a programme that enabled him to classify the AAA ATPase protein family. CLANS software can also be used to visualise the similarities between film actors who have played roles in the same genre category.

Molecular biology assisted by information theory

What do the Internet and mobile communication have in common with the division of yeast cells and viruses? Quite a lot, says Martin Bossert, professor at the Institute of Telecommunication Technology and Applied Information Theory in Ulm. The 55-year-old engineer coordinates an interdisciplinary priority programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG, SPP 1395 Information and Communication Theory in Molecular Biology) that applies information…

    Molecular biomechanics or mechanobiochemistry

Frauke Gräter is head of the Molecular Biomechanics research group at the Institute for Theoretical Studies in Heidelberg. Gräter uses computer-based methods to investigate the mechanical forces acting on biological macromolecules in the nanometre range. Her team was also able to show that highly complex processes such as haemostasis are regulated by shear forces.

Plant ECG – when plants sound the alarm

Although plants do not have a nervous system, they are nevertheless able to transmit and process electrical signals in the organism. The signals are generated in relation to catching prey and fending off enemies as well as in the production and release of fragrances that the plants use to communicate with each other. Lehner GmbH, based in Kirchheim, develops sensor systems for use in plant cultivation that are able to detect specific electrical…

Treasure trove of data from Ulm helps in the understanding of community-acquired pneumonia

CAP community-acquired pneumonia is a common type of pneumonia that mainly affects young and old people. In Germany around 800000 people contract CAP every year and almost one third has to be admitted to hospital exceeding the number of admissions due to cardiac infarction or stroke. The CAPNETZ competence network which up until recently was funded by the German government is gradually shedding light on a hitherto little known disease.

Bridges between university inventors and companies

The most successful companies are those with the strongest innovation power. In their search for new ideas life science companies are increasingly resorting to new inventions coming out of universities. For two decades the Technology Licensing Office TLB in Karlsruhe has been the prime contact for patents requested by Baden-Württemberg universities and in terms of success the TLB is Germanys best patent exploitation office. Drug safety: there is always a risk

In the best-case scenario, drugs are 100% effective; however, there are many cases where they are ineffective. Medicinal therapy is always associated with numerous risks. Experts from all over Germany recently gathered at the 1st Ulm Drug Safety Day to discuss the mode of action of drugs, the influences on drug action and how drug safety can be ensured. The “Stadthaus” in Ulm, where the meeting was held, was packed.
