  • Organ failure due to fatty liver - 24/09/2020 AdobeStock_9729015_SciePro_Leber_Mensch.jpg

HepaRegeniX develops an active substance for liver regeneration

When the liver stops regenerating on its own, it might be possible in future for doctors to intervene with a chemical agent. Tübingen-based HepaRegeniX GmbH is developing a promising candidate with the aim of improving the treatment of both acute and chronic liver failure.

Bacterial flora of the gut: how useful is its analysis?

Microorganisms in the human gut have been linked to obesity, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer and mental disorders. Stool analyses of intestinal flora can be ordered on the Internet from 130 euros upwards, and some also come with recommendations on what to eat for healthy gut bacteria growth. BIOPRO talked with Prof. Dr. Nisar Malek from the University of Tübingen about how useful such microbiome analyses really are.

A gene that regulates body heat and fat storage

Researchers from Heidelberg have shown that the organismal balance between heat production and energy storage is regulated by a gene called THADA. In animal experiments, knocking out the THADA gene leads to excessive food intake, obesity and sensitivity to cold. As humans spread throughout the world and settled in different climate zones, THADA was exposed to high selection pressure due to evolutionary adaptation. This explains why human…

Why fasting is good for health

A protein in the nucleus of liver cells is produced in greater quantities when we go hungry; it limits fatty acid uptake and adjusts the metabolism in the liver. However in people with metabolic disorders, the abnormal expression of this protein (GADD45β), which was previously only known to be involved in the regulation of cell division and DNA repair, leads to a dysregulated fat and sugar metabolism. Scientists from the DKFZ and Helmholtz…

Study shows correlation between intestinal gene activity and obesity

People with obesity suffer from more than just health problems related to their weight. They often feel socially stigmatised because their disease is often seen as a self-inflicted condition. A new study by the University of Hohenheim in cooperation with the eSwiss Medical and Surgical Center in St. Gallen now shows that severe obesity is closely associated with gene activity in the intestinal tissue. This activity is responsible for producing…

Liver cell carcinoma: reducing tumour burden – increasing life expectancy

Liver cell carcinoma or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most malignant human cancers. The disease arises from chronic damage to the liver, usually caused by virus- or alcohol-related liver cirrhoses. Liver tumours are considered difficult to treat, but there is evidence that they actually trigger an immune response in the body. Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme from Freiburg University Medical Centre is seeking to understand this effect and…

Newly discovered gene mutation favour obesity

Professor Martin Wabitsch from Ulm University Hospital has been studying the genetic causes of obesity for quite some time. The discovery of another cause of this complex condition that has key clinical consequences was recently published in the renowned New England Journal of Medicine. Despite the internationally acknowledged success of this research and in contrast to the view of the World Health Organisation and scientific organisations, the…

Advances in the study and treatment of liver diseases

Liver diseases are often underestimated despite being quite common and potentially having serious and even life-threatening consequences, especially in chronic cases. The most common causes of liver diseases are hepatitis viruses, excessive alcohol consumption, and obesity; congenital or autoimmune liver diseases are quite rare. Thanks to advances in medical research, diseases such as hepatitis B and C can be treated effectively. Fewer advances…

MicroRNAs – the saviours of stem cells

Life means almost permanent renewal. Layers of skin and the blood cells of animals are replenished on a life-long basis while plants can even grow whole new leaves flowers and branches. All this is due to stem cells the all-rounders of the cell kingdom. In plants and animals stem cells have the potential to give rise to many types of cells thereby giving plants the ability to grow throughout their life cycle. But how does a cell know that it is a…

Differences between white, brown and “brite” fat tissue

The latest results on the different metabolic pathways used by white and brown fat cells and potential transformations between the two cell types were discussed at the conference “Metabolism 2012: From Signalling to Disease” held on 15th and 16th November 2012 in Heidelberg. A special cell type, so-called “brite” adipocytes, may have the potential to be used in the treatment of obesity and related metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

German Cardiac Society meeting 2012 - Medicine for sick hearts

The recent German Cardiac Society meeting in Mannheim in April 2012 focused on the latest findings related to the prognosis, diagnosis and therapy of heart diseases. While great progress has been made in the therapy of disease symptoms, it will still take a long time before gene and stem cell therapies that target the causes of disease find their way into clinical application. The conference also presented the new German Centre for Cardiovascular…

Does cloudy apple juice prevent colon cancer?

The likelihood of developing colon cancer very much depends on dietary factors. Foods and nutrients with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties have been found to reduce the likelihood of developing this kind of cancer. Research done by scientists from the Karlsruhe-based Max Rubner-Institut suggests that cloudy apple juice can prevent colon cancer. However, little is yet known about the molecular relationships between diet and disease.

Gut bacteria could help with diagnostics and influence treatments

In the future, when you walk into a doctor’s surgery or hospital, you could be asked not just about your allergies and blood group, but also about your gut type. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, and collaborators in the international MetaHIT consortium, have found that humans have three different gut types.

    Metabolic diseases

Metabolic diseases are characterised by disorders of the intermediary metabolism which can either be inherited or acquired. The extent and incidence of metabolic diseases can differ considerably and can range from widespread diseases such as diabetes to rare congenital diseases that frequently have a fatal outcome. Through new approaches in genome research amongst other things science and industry are increasingly focusing on metabolic diseases.

One-sided diabetes debate – social issues not in the public domain

Paediatrician and epidemiologist Reinhard Holl does not like exaggeration. He knows the real statistics only too well and, at the same time, is well aware how different statistics relating to diabetes in children and adolescents are “sold” to the public. Holl is head of the Computer-based Quality Management in Medicine workgroup at the Institute of Epidemiology at the University of Ulm. He has been collecting data on diabetes since 1995 and has…

    Fatal relatives: adiposity and diabetes

Martin Wabitsch was the first German pediatrician to investigate adiposity back when it was seen as a strange subject to study. Nowadays, in Germany the attitude towards adiposity has completely changed. More and more people are suffering from adiposity and diabetes and are consequently at risk of contracting other severe diseases as a result. In children and young adults the situation is alarming; many children are at risk of contracting…
