ILM – Laser Therapy Centre

The study carried out by the ILM investigates the fractional irradiation of wrinkles and scars using an Erbium:YAG handpiece.

Scientists from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg have developed a software programme RepliExplore that enables the construction of individualised models for use in complicated surgical interventions.

Genedata AG has developed a modular software system known as Genedata Screener that is tailored to screening and hit-to-lead applications. Dr. Timo Wittenberg who works at the companys site in Constance Germany told us about the advantages of the software for identifying high-potential leads.

In order to be able to manage the growing amount of information in the life sciences the international research community has developed numerous electronic databases over the last few years. Supported by sophisticated software programmes the stored information can now be analysed effectively. In parallel with work-intensive screening methods which involve many laboratory experiments scientists are increasingly relying on computer-based methods.

Drug screening - higher throughput, quicker and more effective thanks to automation

Over the last few years automation has revolutionised the search for pharmaceutical compounds. Using methods such as high-throughput screening or high-content screening it is possible to analyse thousands of molecule activities very quickly.

The new iNNOVATION fORUM of the Baden-Württemberg MicroMountains Network offered researchers and the medical device industry an intensive moderated dialogue and the chance to make new contacts and to improve their chances for future innovations.

Patients will often see several doctors. Computer scientists at the Centre for Information and Medical Technology at the University of Heidelberg are developing a new electronic patient file to enable the smooth transfer of patient data.

Experienced medical physicists are able to detect everything without needing an operating table or a scalpel to construct a detailed picture of a patient’s cardiovascular system. Dr. Michael Markl is one of these experts, who nevertheless require top technological equipment, i.e. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to gain comprehensive insights into the vascular system.

Karlsruhe based quantiom bioinformatics has developed a software tool that enables the comparative analysis of chromosomes and that enables statements to be made on the correlation of genomic alterations and disease development.

At the International Symposium on the Separation of Proteins Peptides and Polynucleotides 2008 in Baden-Baden quantiom bioinformatics will showcase new application software.

The data-mining tool KNIME has no difficulty in discovering key relationships within large amounts of data. The software is based on the open source development method it integrates current research methods and is doted with an intuitive operational concept.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen and their colleagues from the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines succeeded in accelerating rice plant breeding by using artificial small RNA molecules.

Things that work on a small scale are not necessarily as successful on a large one. It takes a lot of patience and money to scale up analytical or therapeutic processes from the laboratory to industrial production. A new platform consisting of several building blocks minimises the costs.

If the environment is right and both sides are genuinely interested in working together then the cooperation between biologists and engineers will lead to top technologies. One example of such cooperations is the bioreactors of the Department of Cell Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart.

The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences has been successful in the states Innovative Projects Cooperative Projects 2007 programme. Two research projects will receive funding totalling almost 225000 euros.
